A Ministry of Presence
The Loaves & Fishes Ministry was born in the fall of 2010 when we decided to engage in an intentional outreach with wounded servicemen and women at Bethesda Naval Hospital/Walter Reed. From the beginning the response of members and friends in the congregation has been overwhelmingly generous. We raised over $15,000 as seed money for this effort through our Christmas Eve Offering. We have been serving a monthly meal for patients, their families, and the staff for the last year now and are anxious to see where God is taking us on this journey of compassion and care. We are planning to expand the Loaves & Fishes Ministry in 2013 to include a ride program to help family members get off campus and an outreach to longer term rehabilitation patients in the new barracks. We had a feeling from day one that this ministry was going to multiply in mutual blessings and it surely has!

Mark Stephens is the overall point person for this ministry so feel free to contact him if you have questions or want to get involved in some other way (mstephens@usuhs.mil).

Compassionate Listening Training for L & F Volunteers
We offer Compassionate Listening Training Sessions which are designed specifically for people volunteering with the Loaves & Fishes Ministry but are also open to anyone else in the congregation who would simply like to be better equipped in the art of listening as a friend, colleague, or family member.  To date, we've offered two training sessions. Stay tuned for details on when the next one will be offered.

Check out these readings on compassionate listening that describe well the type of presence that we are seeking to offer those whom we meet over at NNMC. Though these readings specifically refer to hospice care settings (hence the reference to those who are dying), they seem to have a lot of application for the kind of work we are doing with wounded soldiers and their families/significant others.
