Director of Student Ministries

Bethesda United Methodist Church

Director of Student Ministries

Director of Student Ministries position opening announced March 15, 2021.  Applications will be accepted through June 1, 2021.  Review of applications will begin on March 31, 2021.

This is a part-time position at 25 hours per week, with a salary of $25,000.  Benefits include holidays and five weeks of paid leave per year.

Bethesda United Methodist Church, located in Bethesda, MD, is a thriving congregation of joyful worship and service with an average Sunday attendance of about 250.  Our mission statement is, “Growing together to love and serve Christ, our neighbor, our world.”  Our call to action is, “Wash More Feet,” which means a servant attitude permeates everything we do.  As a member of the Reconciling Ministries Network, our church is made up of people of differing sexual orientations and gender identities, and we affirm and celebrate all of them.

A significant portion of our church is families with children and youth.  We are seeking a gifted and dedicated person to serve as Director of Student Ministries (DSM).  The DSM will guide and direct the faith development of the church’s middle and high school students by directing a welcoming and safe youth program that balances elements of fellowship, service to others, spiritual formation, and fun.  Through prayer, activities, discussion, and mission trips that appeal to youth, this individual will encourage them to develop Christian friendships and to become and remain committed and faithful Christians.

In addition, the DSM will keep in touch with the church’s young people after they have finished high school and enter college or start a career, to continue their connection with the church.

This successful candidate must be a faithful and committed Christian whose personal conduct is above reproach and who is well versed in Christian teachings generally and United Methodist teachings in particular.

This person will work with the church’s Youth Ministries Committee, under the supervision of the Associate Pastor, to organize and direct a variety of youth activities and events, will be involved in our Confirmation process as a teacher and resource person, and will support the youth praise band.  The position requires recruiting, supervising, and supporting adult volunteers who participate in the youth program.  The DSM will also be expected to be present on Sunday mornings, for weekly staff meetings, and for regular meetings with the Youth Ministry Committee and Grow (Discipleship) Team Leaders.

The position is responsible for establishing and maintaining communication channels, including on social media, to keep the youth, their parents, and other interested parties informed about youth activities and events.  In addition to strong communication skills, the position requires computer and social media skills, excellent listening skills, and effective organizational and administrative skills necessary to plan programs, administer a budget, organize fundraisers, and keep up with all necessary paperwork.

Job Qualifications:

The candidate will:

  • Preferably hold a bachelor’s degree.

  • Have experience in youth ministry.

  • Be able and willing to affirm United Methodist beliefs and practices including the acceptance of different ways of understanding and living out faith in Jesus Christ, and the Wesleyan reliance on Scripture, tradition (church teaching), reason, and experience.

  • Be able to serve as a leader while remaining flexible.

  • Work as a team player with the church’s staff and volunteers.

  • Enjoy hanging out and building relationships with youth and their families.

  • Have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

  • Be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds, and to negotiate stairs.

  • Attend and complete Safe Sanctuaries training (keeping youth and adult leaders safe at all times) upon hire and annually thereafter.

  • Be able to pass a criminal background check.
